Consumers are the true slaves to their contracts

September 15th, 2008

“Setanta have outraged England football fans - its most important brand promoters - by failing to strike a deal with ITV or BBC to show terrestrial highlights of last week’s England games against Andorra and Croatia.” – Marketing Week 12-Sep-08

Most brands go to extraordinary lengths to avoid alienating their core audience” but Setanta have chosen a different path to try and dislodge Sky from the top of the digital TV group of death.

England fans that weren’t lucky enough to go to Barcelona and Zagreb to watch England storm to top of group 6 stated that their main reason for not wanting to get Setanta Sports to watch the England games was the complexity of their contract and the fact that they would have to give “a minimum of two month’s written notice at any time after the first ten days of their contract to cancel.

jabbrz feel the same about complicated contracts and that is why we have made ours as simple as possible, and you can’t get any simpler than NO CONTRACT. That’s right; there is no contact when you sign up to jabbrz. You can use jabbrz as much or as little as possible to make cheap international calls from your mobile phone and when you’ve had enough, because there is no contract you can just stop using the service.

Not only is there no contract, but you can also join for FREE and save money on international calls to anywhere in the world. You could even call a friend in Belarus on 15th October from your mobile phone for only £0.161 per minute to get an update of England’s next away World Cup qualifier instead of signing up to Setanta Sports.

Are all the parts of the internet on the Apple iPhone?

August 28th, 2008

Apple iPhone with jabbrz iconAccording to Apple, yes, but the Advertising Standards Authority has ruled differently after it received two complaints over a recent TV advert that stated “all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone” which the ASA deemed as misleading, given that the iPhone doesn’t support Java or Flash.

If you take the ASA’s definition, not all parts of the internet are on the iPhone but we think all the important parts are! With jabbrz not requiring Flash or Java to operate, an iPhone is perfectly at home using jabbrz. And with nothing to download to a phone to use the service, iPhone users simply have to access jabbrz.mobi on their Safari browser (after setting up an account on jabbrz.com) to start making super cheap international calls direct from their iPhone.

Not only does the iPhone provide a great user experience when using jabbrz but with a jabbrz icon added to a home screen, it’s even quicker to access! All you have to do is visit www.jabbrz.mobi on your iPhone, log in, click on the + icon and select ‘Add to Home Screen’. Wait for a few seconds while the new jabbrz icon appears and click on ‘Add’.

Going for gold doesn’t have to cost the earth

August 12th, 2008

Over two decades ago, the Los Angeles Games became the first Olympics to make money. They had created the idea of the ‘Olympic economy’. The LA Games was the end product, not only of successful marketing, but also of the practical use of existing stadia and infrastructure. Rather than building new venues the city instead focused more on the redevelopment of sports grounds and facilities it already had in place.

Previous Olympic organising committees have struggled to keep the Games within budget with every city wanting to impress, while the world focused its attention on them, and when Beijing’s Mayor Wang Qishan accepted the Olympic flag he thought no differently. With over 550,000 international visitors and over 3 billion viewers expected to watch the opening ceremony, cost cutting isn’t the driving force behind a nation’s Olympic planning.

Ultimately Beijing adopted the approach first seen at Los Angeles back in 1984 and decided to recycle five stadiums instead of building five new ones, saving both money and the environment. Here at jabbrz we have the same philosophy as these Olympic organising committees. We don’t ask our customers to buy a new phone. Cheap international calls shouldn’t be for only those lucky ones with the right handset, or those that are using a particular operator.  It should be for everyone that wants to make a cheap call abroad to a friend or loved one, regardless of phone or network.

I was on the phone very early this morning with a friend in the U.S. We were both watching Michael Phelps cruise to his third gold medal. I was drinking coffee, trying to stay awake, he was in a bar drinking a beer. The outcome was somewhat predictable and at least listening to my American friend revel in this forgone conclusion for the 1m 43 seconds cost me about 2p. Sometimes ‘One World One Dream’ feels wholly inappropriate!

Who lives with a Skype user like this?

July 8th, 2008

As Lloyd Grossman (and David Frost before him) once said, “Let’s look at the evidence”. Well, we had a look and found over 300 million pieces of it! Other registered Skype users that is. Those figures are often debated. Just look at 4Q07 Consumer VoIP Rankings from Ike Elliott (estimating users to be around a somewhat modest 1 million), or Borderless Communicator’s Skype Finishes a record quarter (circa 32 million) to see how diverse reports can be.

What can’t be debated though is that Skype has a considerable active subscriber base - a loyal following that doesn’t just call their fellow Skype buddies for free, but benefits from SkypeOut rates to make cheap calls to regular landlines and mobiles the world over. Jabbrz beta embraces those users. Our service gives those 1, sorry 30, err I mean 300 million people or so, the ability to use their Skype service on their mobile phone. Let’s face it, when you’re calling friends and family in a different time zone, it’s not always convenient for everyone to be sat at their computers at the same time.

We’re not the only ones to be offering low cost international calls from your mobile. Of course we’re not. There are also other ways to get Skype on a mobile phone. You might need a particular type of phone though, or perhaps a new windows mobile device of some sort, with lots of spare memory and no other applications running. Jabbrz beta meanwhile, brings Skype to YOUR mobile so your phone remains free from downloads, compatibility issues, upgrades and all the rest. You don’t need to be on a particular network either. Our only caveat is that you can connect to the internet on it.

So, who lives with a Skype user like this? Anyone who wants to make cheap international calls and not be chained to their PC - and we think there’s a few of you out there!
